Fourth Of July Activities & More

Your guide to staying connected in Franklin, TN

Good afternoon, Franklin.

Happy Fourth of July week! This Thursday marks 249 years since a scrappy band of colonists pulled off one of history’s biggest upsets—declaring independence from the most powerful empire in the world
 and somehow making it stick.

The odds of the American colonies defeating Great Britain in 1776? Low. Extremely low. Here are some stats:

🔮 Britain had the best-trained army and the largest navy in the world.
The American colonies had
farmers with muskets and no navy. At the start of the war, the Royal Navy had over 100 ships-of-the-line, while the Continental Navy had just 8 ships.

đŸ”” It was like a high school JV team beating an NFL Team.
That’s how historian Joseph Ellis described it. Imagine your neighborhood’s pickup basketball team upsetting Team USA
 in the Olympics
 and then forming a country.

🔮 No major colony had successfully broken away from its European parent before.
The U.S. was the first modern nation born from a colonial revolt—and it inspired a global wave of revolutions (France, Latin America, etc.).

đŸ”” Odds of American victory in 1776?
While no Vegas lines existed, modern military historians estimate less than 10% chance of success, especially without French help (which didn’t come until 1778).

🔮 The Americans lost more battles than they won.
George Washington’s army was outmaneuvered, outgunned, and outnumbered for most of the war—and yet still managed to win the war.

đŸ”” The U.S. had no navy, no money, and no government.
Britain had a Parliament. The colonies had a “we’ll figure it out” attitude. They were funding a war with loans, IOUs, and sheer willpower.

🔮 They pulled it off before the invention of coffee as we know it.
That’s right. The Boston Tea Party happened, and coffee wasn’t even a thing yet in the colonies. They started a revolution on bad sleep and bitter tea.

Yet here we are, nearly two and a half centuries later, lighting fireworks, grilling burgers, and debating whether a hot dog is a sandwich—all thanks to a group of rebels who bet it all on freedom.

So whether you’re watching fireworks, waving flags, or just enjoying a well-deserved day off, we hope you take a moment to appreciate the history behind the holiday—and maybe even channel a little of that bold, independent spirit in your own week.

Nashville Airport Expansion
Yesterday, Nashville International Airport unveiled the Concourse D extension at an exclusive pre-opening reception co-hosted by the Arts at the Airport Foundation. Featuring five new gates, eight new locations to shop, eat and drink, a moving walkway and three original pieces of artwork, the extended concourse culminates in a record node—a rotunda with panoramic views from which travelers can access BNA’s first outdoor terrace, offering views of the airfield and even downtown Nashville.

Opening to the public on July 8, the Concourse D extension is the first project to be completed under New Horizon, the $3 billion growth and renovation plan at BNA. Construction involved 715 total workers, 79% of whom are local, and approximately 700,000 man hours of work.

The Concourse D extension features eight new concepts for passengers to eat, drink and shop:

  • 3rd & Broadway: At the heart of Nashville’s entertainment district lies the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Broadway, where everyone comes to soak up the sights, sounds, flavors and experiences that make Nashville a top tourist destination.

  • Sandella’s Flatbread CafĂ©: Signature flatbreads, refreshing juices and artisanal coffees.

  • New Heights Cantina & Taqueria: Award-winning local New Heights beer complements Mexican cuisine. This concept features a breakfast menu, live music and a Taco Truck for orders on the go.

  • The Castle: This vibrant restaurant and bar is the perfect spot for soccer fans to enjoy delicious food, refreshing drinks and the thrill of Nashville SC action before your flight!

  • Flytes Virtual Dining Hall: Modernizes airport dining with fresh meals and diverse options.

  • Daniel X Diamond: Country music’s favorite fashion brand, now offering a variety of rhinestoned products in addition to their signature fringe jackets at BNA.

  • Nashville Tracks by Hudson: Celebrates the city’s musical legacy and history of producing craft spirits. Travelers can also browse products from local artisans alongside travel essentials, like snacks, beverages, tech needs and books.

  • Martini: Expertly crafted martinis, savory sandwiches, flatbreads, craft beers and Frothy Monkey Coffee.
